During the struggle the revolution of 1821, along with
Hydra  Spetses
and
Psara
played an important role because of the large naval force at their disposal. In the Revolution of 1821, Hydra had 186 ships.
Great captains, ship owners and politicians originating from the island among them Admiral Andreas Miaoulis , Koundouriotis , Kriezis etc. This maritime tradition continues today with a small fishing fleet and the Merchant Marine Academy started working immediately after the revolution of 1821 and is the oldest Merchant Marine Academy in the eastern Mediterranean, which is housed in the mansion of the Chams.

The town of Hydra, which is the only city on the island has been declared and preserved as the movement of cars. It is spread over two rocky hills and full of traditional houses with tiled roofs, heavy blue doors and windows. Hydra decades, is one of the favorite destinations of Greek and foreign visitors. On the island there are 300 churches and monasteries 5.
The most important celebration today in Hydra is Miaoulia which are three day events dedicated to the action of Admiral Miaoulis and held every year in late June that are part of the naval weeks.
Hydra, more than all the Greek islands, inspired the Fine Arts. Famous Greek and foreign artists presented their landscapes. Great artists such as Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall visited the site and impressed at the plans of strict regimens. It is no coincidence that the Hydra is the Annex of the Faculty of Fine Arts from 1936 housed in the four-story mansion Tombazis (west of the port).
