Specimen Certificates and Bonds are actual certificates that have been overprinted or punch cancelled with the word "SPECIMEN".
This was done in order to invalidate and prevent their use illegally. They were printed in limited amounts in order to evaluate the quality of the printing before the final print run was given the "OK". They were then maintained in the Printers files and were used as samples to show prospective clients the quality of their work.
In some instances, specimen certificates and bonds were made for a company but were never used due to a change in design or color making the specimen examples very rare.
