In the early 1930's, two local farmers, Alfred Roy and Dick Makela, sitting together over coffee one day, mulled the idea of building a cooperative. A few years later, two refurbished school buildings were nailed together and re-opened as the Pike-Sandy Cooperative.
Co-ops were formed as a way for rural consumers — who felt they had little economic clout as individuals — to band together and stand against price gouging by product distributors.
Cooperative stores enjoyed their heyday in the United States beginning in the early 1900s. In 1920, there were about 2,600 consumer cooperatives in the country, and all but 11 were general stores. The vast majority of co-ops operated in towns of 2,500 people or less.
Some co-ops thrived, drawing loyal customers who did the bulk of their shopping at the stores. Others quickly crumbled, unable to deal with rapid expansion. And still others waxed and waned.
The Pike-Sandy Co-op originally marketed mainly farm products produced by members and patrons. The first meetings, dominated by local Finnish residents, were conducted and recorded in the Finnish language. Years later the official language turned to English.
As the store expanded, so did the product line. At one time or another, the Co-op sold work clothes, animal feed, Evinrude outboard motors, fresh-cut meat, all grades of oil and grease, and small electrical appliances.
